It’s not “Just a Period”

Almost all experience period pain

In a recent Guardian Survey of 16- to 40-year-olds based in the UK almost all had experienced period pain (96%), with 59% saying their pain was severe.

“Just a Period” campaign

We support the Wellbeing of Women charity and it’s “Just a Period” campaign, opening up the conversation around periods and aiming to address “the many years of medical bias, neglect and stigma in women’s health”

Our conversation starter

All women and girls should have access to information like this from our Senior Clinician Bridget, who discusses why conventional solutions like the oral contraceptive pill or anti-inflammatory painkillers don’t get to the root causes of the excess inflammation or hormone imbalance that interfere with our pain receptors.

She shares some top easy self-help tips such as drinking 3L of filtered water daily, as well as recommendations where professional help is needed like optimising your gut health.

Bridget’s Easy Self-Help Tips

1. Drink 3L of filtered water daily to help flush out excessive levels of toxins that can interfere with hormone function.

2. Avoid coffee, including decaffeinated versions.

3. Try spearmint and green tea.

4. Enjoy an anti-inflammatory diet.

5. Include cruciferous vegetables.

6. Reduce Endocrine Disrupting Chemical’s found in beauty products, skincare, and plastics.

Her other recommendations which need tailoring, so professional guidance is best:

1. Optimise your gut health.

2. Consider taking a Magnesium supplement to reduce uterine spasms.

3. Supplementing with Vitamin B6 can be helpful to rebalance progesterone levels.
